FAQs about credit for previous experience

Can previous experience in Alberta, other provinces or countries be credited toward a new apprenticeship in Alberta?

Yes, as long as the employer accepts and recommends this previous experience when signing the apprentice's application. Previous time must be documented on the application form in the appropriate section.

If more than the required number of hours is worked in one year, can the extra hours be credited to the following year?

In most cases, if an apprentice has more than the required number of hours of on-the-job training in one year, the number of excess hours (to a maximum of 480) can be applied to the following year when required to make up a shortage. More information is available from any Apprenticeship and Industry Training Office.

What is the maximum amount of previous experience that can be given toward an Alberta apprenticeship?

An apprentice must fulfill one full term of apprenticeship in a trade.

Example: If you are in a trade that is a four-year apprenticeship, the employer can only give credit for a maximum of three years previous experience even if you have more than that.

Can experience in one trade be used toward time credit in another trade?

This will depend on whether or not there is any accreditation given by the trade's Provincial Apprenticeship Committee (PAC). Contact an Apprenticeship and Industry Training Office for more information.
