Recognition of other trade certificates – the Equivalency Program
You may have a valid trade certificate that was issued by another recognized apprenticeship authority (province, territory or federal jurisdiction) in Canada but you want to have a document that proves your certificate is recognized in Alberta.
That's the purpose of the Equivalency Program.
If you chose to apply for recognition of your provincial or territorial trade certificate and, if you qualify, you may be granted an Alberta Equivalency document.
To qualify for an Equivalency document based on a recognized credential you must:
- hold a valid trade credential that:
- is in a trade that is designated in Alberta,
- was issued by another Canadian province or territory or by the Department of National Defence,
- does not have an Interprovincial Standards Red Seal on the credential, and
- is a completion of apprenticeship certificate issued in a trade before the trade began participation in the Interprovicial Standards (Red Seal) Program, or
- is a completion of appreticeship certificate issued in a trade that does not participate in the Interprovincal Standards (Red Seal) Program, or
- other recognized trade credential
- download and print an Equivalency Application or contact any of the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Offices for an application
- complete the application and deliver it in person to one of our offices. Government issued photo identification is required.
- pay the non-refundable application fee
If you have one of these certificates you do not require an Alberta Equivalency document to work in Alberta. Because some employers may not be familiar with your certificate, you may choose to apply for an Alberta Equivalency document.
