EMPLOYER VISITS

What are employer visits?
Employers of apprentices or certified tradespeople who are doing work in designated trades can expect to be visited by an Apprenticeship and Industry Training consultant.
Employer visits are done by Apprenticeship and Industry Training to promote their programs, to ensure that Alberta has a skilled workforce, and that work is being done is in compliance with the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Act.
Some of the activities that take place during an employer visit are:
- marketing Apprenticeship and Industry Training programs
- providing information about services that are available to employers and employees, and providing assistance to tradespeople who require training or certification
- ensuring that apprentices are receiving appropriate experience and training at the job site, and are being paid according to the legislation that applies to their trade
- counselling the employer and employees about their responsibilities for apprenticeship training
- consulting with employers and employees about their training needs and any special requirements
- monitoring labour market activity to help Apprenticeship and Industry Training develop plans for meeting industry demand

Authority of Apprenticeship and Industry Training consultants
In situations where it is required, the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Act provides the authority for an apprenticeship consultant to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Act.
Under the Act, an Apprenticeship and Industry Training consultant may enter the premises of an employer where work is being done in designated trades, and carry out an inspection.
In carrying out an inspection, an apprenticeship consultant has the authority to:
- inspect the premises or location, and any record relating to payroll, job classification, performance of work, qualifications or the training of workers
- make copies or take photographs of any relevant records, or remove any information in order to make copies or take photographs
- make inquiries of any person regarding any relevant records, or the employment, qualifications, or training of workers
- observe work being carried out by an apprentice, and any related training that is taking place
